Accessibility

If disabled people cannot use this website, we have failed at the first hurdle.

We run classes for disabled people. It would be indefensible for our website to be one more thing that shuts them out. So this is what we hold ourselves to, in public, where you can hold us to it.

Our standard

This site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the international standard for web accessibility. In plain terms, that means:

  • You can use it without a mouse. Everything works from a keyboard, and you can always see where you are.
  • You can use it with a screen reader. Headings are in order, images are described, forms have real labels.
  • You can make the text bigger. Zoom to 200 percent and nothing breaks or disappears.
  • You can read it. Every text and background pairing on this site meets or beats the required contrast.
  • Nothing moves unless you ask it to. No autoplay, no carousels that run off on their own, and motion respects your system setting.
  • You can tap it. Buttons and links are big enough to hit on a phone.

Accessibility in the classes, not just the website

The website is the easy part. What matters more is the room.

  • Tell us what you need and we will plan for it. Every enrollment form has a box for this, and it is a real question, not a formality.
  • Support staff are welcome. If someone comes with you, they come in.
  • Nobody is required to perform. Participating on your own terms counts as participating.
  • Every place we teach in person is step-free, with an accessible restroom and parking. Four of our seven classes are on Zoom, so for those the room is your own.

What is still open

An honest accessibility statement lists what is not done yet. These are the three we are working on.

  • Testing the site with real assistive technology users, not just automated tools.
  • A plain-language version of the key pages, so participants can read the site themselves rather than only their families reading it.
  • Captions and transcripts on any video we publish.

Something not working?

Tell us and we will fix it. This is not a complaints procedure, it is a favor you are doing us.
